Trenholm Little League Call For Action to Its Members
Trenholm Little League has been a cornerstone of youth sports in Richland County for 35 years. But the condition of
Trenholm Park
—our home field—is unacceptable. Richland County Recreation Commission proudly notes on the Trenholm Park website that “Trenholm Park was the very first park opened by the Richland County Recreation Commission back in 1968”. Well, the very first park in “RCRC history” has had many years of neglect, which has left it unsafe and unusable in many areas, and we need
your voice
to help us change that.
We are asking all Trenholm families, friends, and supporters to
contact your elected
officials
and urge them to:
Prioritize funding for critical infrastructure repairs at Trenholm Park
Ensure sustained funding for ongoing maintenance and safety needs
Support Trenholm Little League’s mission to provide a safe, inclusive space for all children

My Message To Our Elected Officials
Dear Members of the Richland County Council,
I am writing on behalf of
Trenholm Little League
, which proudly celebrates its
35th anniversary
this year. As one of Richland County’s most inclusive and impactful youth programs, Trenholm Little League brings together more than
1,000 children
from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds to participate in baseball, softball, and tee-ball. Entirely volunteer-run, our league serves families from both the wealthiest and most underserved zip codes in the county, fostering unity, sportsmanship, and community pride.
In accordance with
Little League International regulations
, Trenholm Little League does not deny any child the opportunity to play due to financial hardship. To uphold this commitment, we work tirelessly with volunteers and community partners to offer scholarships and keep registration fees as low as possible—ensuring that every child has access to the game.
Despite the league’s significance,
Trenholm Park
, the first park in the Richland County Recreation Commission’s history, as they so proudly note on their website, and also where our games and practices are held, has suffered from so many years of neglect. The park’s infrastructure is deteriorating:
Chronic
flooding and drainage issues
disrupt league activities
Falling fences, unsafe bleachers, and non-compliant press boxes
pose safety risks
Washed-out walkways
and an overall unsafe environment hinder accessibility
The
35+ year-old canteen
lacks restrooms and fails to meet the standards
required by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture for a full food service license—limiting our ability to generate revenue critical to sustaining the league
Each year, Trenholm Little League operates on a
tight budget
, relying heavily on
volunteers and community donations. Our volunteers dedicate hundreds of hours to
field maintenance, and the league spends approximately
$25,000 (almost 1/5 of our total budget
on port-a-potties and maintenance for Richland County Recreation Commission (RCRC) facilities. Raising this money each year places a significant burden for a volunteer-led organization.
We have repeatedly met with RCRC representatives in
2023, 2024, and 2025
to
express our concerns, but have only been told to wait for future solutions. This
continued lack of support—and the disparity in resources compared to other Richland County parks—is unacceptable and undermines the value Trenholm Little League
brings to our community.
We respectfully urge the Richland County Council to take meaningful action to address the urgent needs of Trenholm Park. Your support is essential to ensuring that our league can continue to provide a
safe, inclusive, and enriching environment
for all children in Richland County.
I invite you to
visit Trenholm Park
to see the current conditions firsthand and hear
directly from the families and volunteers who are impacted—both positively and
negatively—by the state of the park. Together, we can begin a meaningful dialogue
about how to address both the
immediate
and
long-term
needs of Trenholm Park and Trenholm Little League.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Adam Schanz
President
