Trenholm’s Red, White, and Boom All Stars played Irmo’s All Stars for the South Carolina Little League District 3 Little League Softball Championship on Sunday night, June 15 at Friarsgate Park in Irmo. In the top of the first inning, Trenholm’ leadoff hitter singled up the middle. The #2 hitter reached on a misplay by the shortstop and that put runners on first and second. After two outs, Trenholm pulled off a double steal. Then Trenholm pulled off a steal of home and an error resulted in the runner from second scoring for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first inning, working around two walks, Trenholm was able to hold Irmo scoreless thanks to a groundout to shortstop, a foul out to the first baseman and a strikeout. With one out In the top of the second inning, Trenholm’s #9 batter smacked a hard groundball single to left field. The #10 hitter then hit an infield single to shortstop. An errant throw allowed both runners to move up to second and third. The #11 hitter then smoked an opposite field hard groundball single into right field to score both runners. Then with 2 outs, the #13 hitter walked to put runners on first and second. Trenholm’s leadoff hitter then cracked a line drive single into center field to score the runner from second and Trenholm was up 5-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Irmo scored two runs on three walks, a stolen base and a misplay. But Trenholm ended the inning on a caught stealing of second base. After two innings, Trenholm was up 5-2.
In the top of the third inning, Trenholm’s #3 and #4 hitters each walked to put runners on first and second with no out. After a force out at third put runners on first and second, the #6 hitter walked to load the bases. With the #7 hitter up, the runner from third scored on an error and there were runners now on first and second. The #8 hitter then smacked a line drive single to right field to score both runners to give Trenholm an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Trenholm retired Irmo in order on a strikeout, a ground out to the shortstop and a pop up to the first baseman. After three innings, the score was 8-2. In the top of the fourth inning, Trenholm was retired in order. But in the bottom of the fourth inning, Trenholm returned the favor, retiring Irmo again in order for the second straight inning on two strikeouts and a ground out to the first baseman.
With one out, in the top of the fifth inning, the leadoff batter walked. The #2 hitter turned around to hit lefty. With the runner on first running, she slapped a ground ball to third base. She beat the third baseman’s throw to first while the runner from first raced all the way around to third on the beautifully executed hit and run. The #3 hitter then smoked a hard ground ball RBI single to centerfield scoring the runner from third and the runner from first moved all the way over to third. With the cleanup hitter up, the runner from first stole second. Then the cleanup hitter then hit a rocket ground ball double into left field to score the runner from third and the runner from second held at third. The #5 hitter then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the runner from third to make the score 11-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Irmo had two runners on first and third with one due to a dropped third strike and a fly ball single to centerfield. But Trenholm caught the runner from third stealing home for the second out and Trenholm’s starting pitcher got her second strikeout of the inning to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth inning, Trenholm’s #7 hitter worked out a one out walk and she would later steal second base. Then with two outs, the #9 hitter smoke a hard ground ball double to centerfield, scoring the runner from second. The batter would take third on an error. The #10 hitter would crack a line drive single to right field to score the runner from third. Trenholm now had a 13-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Irmo’s leadoff batter cracked a hard groundball down the first base line. Trenholm’s first baseman made a sweet back hand of the grounder and stepped on first for the first out. Irmo’s next batter singled to left field. But Trenholm would get the next batter on a fielder’s choice grounder that the pitcher fielded and fired to the shortstop covering second for the second out. Then the pitcher would strike out the next Irmo batter to win the game and the championship. Trenholm is your SC Little League District 3 Little League Softball Champions with the 13-2 win!
The Trenholm team was awarded the district championship batter after the game. Both Trenholm and Irmo will represent the district in the SC State Little League Softball Championship to be held at Florence starting on June 26.
In the win, Mollie went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a stolen base. She also pitched a complete game victory, allowing 2 runs on only 3 hits and striking out 10 batters. Brooklyn went 2 for 2 with an RBI, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Lila Elliott went 2 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Austin went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and a run scored. Gillian Knight went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. GrayceLynn went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Aya went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.
Trenholm Red, White and Boom will now play in the state tournament on June 26 at Florence Little League. Congrats to Trenholm Red, White and Boom on their District 3 Championship!
